Sous Chef

In anticipation of reopening our Chilliwack location, we’re gearing up to build an incredible leadership team. 

The Sous Chef supports the Head Chef in overseeing the full culinary operation at Old Yale Brewing. This position is central to maintaining the highest standards of food quality, kitchen efficiency, and day‑to‑day logistics. Beyond assisting with leadership and coordination, the Sous Chef helps shape the kitchen’s culture, ensures consistency in execution, and upholds the operational excellence that defines the Old Yale Brewing experience.

This position reports to the Head Chef, General Manager, and alternatively the Hospitality Manager as needed. This role will work collaboratively with all members of the restaurant team. 

Responsibilities


Kitchen Leadership and Team Support

+       Lead kitchen operations in the absence of the Head Chef, ensuring smooth service.
+       Provide leadership oversight of situations that arise and resourcefully resolve issues.
+       Provide support, coaching, mentorship, and training to team members in the kitchen.
+       Onboard and train new kitchen team members.
+       Assist with the implementation and management of kitchen and restaurant policies and procedures.
+       Assist with scheduling, task delegation, and daily team communication.
+       Help build a positive, collaborative kitchen culture that reflects Old Yale Brewing’s community‑driven values.

Culinary Execution and Quality Control

+       Oversee food preparation and presentation to ensure that food is always top quality and meet brand expectations.
+       Monitor ticket time and workflow to keep service running efficiently.
+       Participate in menu development, recipe testing, and seasonal updates.
+       Assist with prep and cooking duties to ensure the kitchen is fully supported.

Operational and Administrative

+       Work alongside and assist the Head Chef maintain inventory levels, place orders, and manage supplier relationships.
+       Support and enforce cost-control initiatives.
+       Ensure proper equipment and kitchen facility maintenance and report issues promptly.
+       Assist with planning events, specials, and high-volume service periods.
+       Offer suggestions and creative ideas that can improve the kitchen’s overall performance.
+       Assist with screening and interviewing candidates for kitchen roles.
+       Assist with scheduling and approving working hours.

Health, Safety, and Compliance

+       Uphold strict food safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards in alignment with both industry regulations and Old Yale Brewing’s internal expectations.
+       Ensure all team members follow proper food‑handling procedures and maintain clean, organized workstations.
+       Conduct regular checks on storage, labeling, and temperature control to ensure compliance and safety.

Collaboration and Communication

+       Communicate effectively with front-of-house team to ensure seamless service.
+       Support cross-department coordination for events, menu rollouts, and operational changes.

Qualifications

+       A love and passion for the craft beer industry!
+       Have proven experience and in-depth knowledge of kitchen operations, cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
+       Strong attention to detail in food quality, portioning, and presentation.
+       In‑depth knowledge of food safety regulations and kitchen sanitation standards.
+       Adaptable, calm under pressure, and solution‑oriented.
+       Able to perform well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
+       Be high energy and performance-driven with a strong desire for continuous improvement
+       Strong verbal and written communication skills including superior communication and interpersonal skills.
+       Flexible, dependable, and dedicated.
+       Valid Food Safety certification (or willingness and ability to obtain).
+       First Aid certification (or willingness and ability to obtain).

Compensation

$45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
